I’m a new Coastie …
I’m a new Coastie going through flight training now. Although, I’ve been at Whiting Field a couple of times…I have not ever seen the “FLY COAST GUARD” water tower a 0:26. Did they take it out or do I just need to look again?

Very cool!

Very cool!
Spiderbait is a great choice, much better than the wornout Top Gun theme.

The biggest hurdle …
The biggest hurdle is becoming an officer. Getting accepted to flight training is not difficult as long as you are medically qualified. Previous flight time doesn’t change your chances because we all go through the same syllabus regardless of our background. Folks with prior civilian time often struggle to adapt to the military style of training.

If you really want …
If you really want to fly helicopters talk to the Army or National Guard. Your guranteed helicopters, provided you don’t fail, and as a warrant officer no degree is needed.

do you have an …
do you have an advantage of getting accepted into the school if you have previous flight time?

Well I’m no Marine, …
Well I’m no Marine, but I can tell you what routes you can take. If your still in high school you can look into the Naval Academy, or a school with NROTC. If you almost or already have your college degree you can apply for Officer Candidate School. As far as getting helicopters it all depends on your performance in flight school, if you can physical fit in the aircraft, and the needs of the Marines.
Good luck.

Get in touch with …
Get in touch with your local Officer Selection Officer and talk to him about Marine Officer Programs. If you qualify, he might set you up with a ground contract for Officer Candidates School and you can try to earn an Air contract.

TrueCourse, your …
TrueCourse, your info is a little out of date: you don’t need 20/20 vision and Marines don’t have AOCS. You also left out TBS, IFS, and API.

sheyras,
The Navy …

sheyras,
The Navy generally uses the PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) laser process and NOT Lasix surgery. They found with Lasix the corneal flap may be subject to tearing or irritation in extreme combat environments.

i heard you can get …
i heard you can get lasik and they’ll take you.

ilikecheese: are …
ilikecheese: are you a college grad? That’s a start. Apply, take written tests, etc. Oh yeah… must be medically qualified with 20/20 vision (no LASIK, but check current regs [correct me any1]. If accepted, you go through AOCS in Pensacola, FL. If you pass that, then you get commissioned as a 2LT. Then you go through primary flight training at the same place. If you top your class, you get a choice. If not – needs of the Marine Corps. That’s basically it :)
